A Dub in Cork, like.

A Dub in Cork, like.

Growing up in Swords, I never expected to live anywhere else. I wasn’t a full Dub in the eyes of my peers. A Father from Wexford and a Mother from Cahirsiveen in deepest South Kerry meant I was often defending my born and raised Dubness. I was told I had a country accent when I was at home, and a Dublin accent when I was holidaying in Kerry. Of course, I didn’t realise it at the time, but that…

The Lockdown is not over

The Lockdown is not over

I’ve grown a beard during lockdown. It’s my Corona beard. I will be getting rid of it in early July when I return to work. My face will be back to normal. I don’t think I’ll be able to say the same about much else. The ‘new normal’ that we hear so much about is still very much in construction. As an airport worker I will see this more than most. Air Travel will look very different from now on….

Coronavirus : What comes after?

Coronavirus : What comes after?

I haven’t written anything in a while. The world has changed so quickly and so severely that my full energy has been needed to process it all. My uber safe ‘Job for Life’ in the Aviation sector is all of a sudden precarious. A childhood accident that has left me immuno-compromised (but never really affected me) is now an Achilles heel. There is no school or much of anything. Strangers are now potentially deadly. We are living in a sci…

Happy Christmas

Happy Christmas

Time is speeding up. I have no evidence for this statement but I am utterly convinced that it is true. It seems to be Christmas every six months. This last year has been the quickest yet. I fear that record will continue to be broken every single year. The strangest part is that it is only at times like Christmas that I realise it. The rest is more of a blur spent doing very important things. Most of which…

If Laura Brennan hasn’t convinced them, nothing will.

If Laura Brennan hasn’t convinced them, nothing will.

If you are one of the few that hasn’t watched ‘Laura Brennan: This is me’ then I highly recommend you do. Especially if you are a parent or ever plan on becoming one. It’s been a long time since I’ve shed a tear watching T.V. Even though I was already familiar with Laura’s story, I found the programme incredibly emotional. The scene where they went to see Santa got me. I have daughters. I can only imagine how they all…

Back to School.

Back to School.

School is back. With it comes early wake up calls, washing uniforms, lost pencils, homework, afterschool activities and daily collections. Routine is back. The summer was fun but I’m ok with school being back. We’re back in the rhythm already and it’s been less than a week. Christmas will come in a blur. I’ve always known I wanted children. I don’t think it was even a decision. Some biological imperative deep inside meant that I never had to put much…

Social Media: The Wild West.

Social Media: The Wild West.

Most people are nice. Or at least they seem to be. Anytime I’m out for a walk the vast majority of people say hello as they pass. People will move aside to make way for a buggy, cars will stop to let you cross the road, most people are nice. I don’t think anyone has ever randomly thrown abuse at me in public. Nobody has called me names or delivered personal insult. Thankfully that kind of behaviour would be…

Cúl Camps, Gaelic Games and me.

Cúl Camps, Gaelic Games and me.

My daughters are attending Cúl Camp for the first time this week. They never wanted to go before. During the school year a coach from the local club, Aghada, was in to school to provide coaching and both my girls got hooked. How bad. They’ve even joined the club. Dry evenings are now spent practicing skills in the garden. I mostly climb over the wall to get the ball back. Cúl Camps consists of both football and hurling. The girls…

No more Homework!

No more Homework!

Populism has taken the world by storm. Donald Trump and Brexit are the most damaging examples. Like so many others I have watched with dismay. In that light I’m a little uncomfortable proposing what could be considered the most populist proposal ever. No more homework. It’s a wish I’m sure we’ve all heard throughout our school lives. Just thinking back to the mountains of work gives me a feeling akin to fingernails on a blackboard. As a campaign it has…

H.P.V. Vaccine is a life saver.

H.P.V. Vaccine is a life saver.

Becoming a parent is the most wonderful thing that happens to many of us. That moment when you first get to meet your child is truly life changing. Nothing prepares you for the complete change in perspective and life that they bring with them. The desire to protect and care for them is indescribable. It’s hard to remember what I did with my time before. Life is so much busier now but I wouldn’t change a thing. I don’t think…
