Everybody is writing a book

Everybody is writing a book

I’ve heard it said that everybody has a book in them. It just needs to be let out they say. What I didn’t know was that a large percentage of everybody has gone ahead and written one. That’s certainly how it feels.   I’m willing to wager that my misconceptions about writing a book were not at all unusual. You see I thought the hard part would be writing it. And don’t get me wrong, it was both time consuming…

Irish Politics after Brexit

Irish Politics after Brexit

It’s hard to believe that the Brexit referendum took place over three years ago. June 23rd 2016 brought us a democratic result that nobody believed was possible, including a lot of the people that campaigned and voted for it. As Britain’s nearest neighbours it was clear that Brexit was going to have a huge impact on Irish Politics. I’m not sure anyone expected it to be the all-consuming issue that it has been for over three years and counting….

Gender Quotas reduce quality.

Gender Quotas reduce quality.

There was much debate when Gender Quotas were introduced in Irish National Politics back in 2012. Although I saw many dangers I agreed with the measure. We were told that gender imbalance was so serious that this drastic step was needed if we were to make progress in any reasonable timescale. We were told that Gender Quotas would be a temporary measure and other actions would be taken that would address the underlying reasons for gender imbalance which would…

The joke is on those that are ridiculing Greta Thunberg.

The joke is on those that are ridiculing Greta Thunberg.

I’ve been reading a lot of negative commentary towards 16 year old climate striker Greta Thunberg in recent days. R.T.E. luminary Ryan Tubridy not least amongst them. The most striking thing (forgive the pun) about much of the negativity has been the clear ignorance those criticizing have displayed. It is very obvious that most have not heard any of Greta’s speeches. At least they haven’t listened. The laziest critics have used lines like ‘I wouldn’t want a sixteen year old…

If Laura Brennan hasn’t convinced them, nothing will.

If Laura Brennan hasn’t convinced them, nothing will.

If you are one of the few that hasn’t watched ‘Laura Brennan: This is me’ then I highly recommend you do. Especially if you are a parent or ever plan on becoming one. It’s been a long time since I’ve shed a tear watching T.V. Even though I was already familiar with Laura’s story, I found the programme incredibly emotional. The scene where they went to see Santa got me. I have daughters. I can only imagine how they all…

Northern Ireland at a crossroads

Northern Ireland at a crossroads

We all have stories of choices we made that defined our lives ever after. Important points in time that had weighty consequences. That time you applied for the job that led to you getting where you are now. Or that time you didn’t apply and your friend who did is now a millionaire with a big house and a cleaner. (Appearances can be deceiving, maybe he’s miserable inside). Northern Ireland is in this situation right now. Unlike us all those…

Back to School.

Back to School.

School is back. With it comes early wake up calls, washing uniforms, lost pencils, homework, afterschool activities and daily collections. Routine is back. The summer was fun but I’m ok with school being back. We’re back in the rhythm already and it’s been less than a week. Christmas will come in a blur. I’ve always known I wanted children. I don’t think it was even a decision. Some biological imperative deep inside meant that I never had to put much…

Social Media: The Wild West.

Social Media: The Wild West.

Most people are nice. Or at least they seem to be. Anytime I’m out for a walk the vast majority of people say hello as they pass. People will move aside to make way for a buggy, cars will stop to let you cross the road, most people are nice. I don’t think anyone has ever randomly thrown abuse at me in public. Nobody has called me names or delivered personal insult. Thankfully that kind of behaviour would be…

Greta Thunberg : The voice we need.

Greta Thunberg : The voice we need.

I’ve often heard it said that children are very wise. Usually this remark has been made after a child has displayed blind religious faith by regurgitating some religious statement or repeated a saying at an appropriate time. In my experience children are not wise. They can be clever, witty and very loving. They undoubtedly enhance our lives greatly, but they are not wise. Wisdom comes with experience. We can all look back at times in our past when we…

Paper Straws: Suck it up.

Paper Straws: Suck it up.

We are all now environmentalists. It seems to have happened fairly quickly. I think the kids marching was the final straw. The evidence of the damage we humans have done and continues to do is all around us. We care about the next generation. We are now ready to change our ways. A famous song from a disgraced artist comes to mind. We’ve had a chat with the man in the mirror. Or so it would seem. It feels…
